Contractor licensing in Michigan

Michigan licenses residential builders but not commercial builders, so commercial-only general contractors should check with the local building official. Mechanical, electrical, and fire alarm contractors are licensed statewide by LARA, and fire alarm and suppression firms working in Bureau of Fire Services regulated facilities need Act 144 certification.

Trade-by-trade rules are on each trade page. Confirm with Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Construction Codes. Checked 2026-09-30.
